How a Start Up Loan works

A Start Up Loan is a personal loan to you as an individual, used for your business. It is unsecured, so you put up no assets, and it is backed by the government through the British Business Bank. Because the loan is personal, you are liable for it whether you trade as a sole trader, in a partnership or through a limited company.

The rate is fixed for the life of the loan. It was 6% from the scheme’s launch in 2012 until 6 April 2026, when it rose to 7.5% for new loans. Loans approved before that date keep their 6% rate, including any second tranche drawn under the same loan. Interest is the only cost of the loan, including when you repay it early.

Support comes with the money. The application includes help with a business plan and a cash flow forecast, and first-time recipients get up to 12 months of mentoring with the loan. A second Start Up Loan is treated as a new application at the rate in force when you apply.

Who can apply

You must be 18 or over, a UK resident with the right to work in the UK, and your business must be based in the UK. The business must be new or have traded for up to 60 months; the limit was 36 months until 6 April 2026. You declare that you cannot get finance from other sources, and you must pass a credit check and show that you can afford the repayments.

Partners can each apply for up to £25,000, with a ceiling of £100,000 for one business. Each application is assessed separately, each partner is personally liable for their own loan, and the applicants must hold at least 50% of the business between them. You can use a Start Up Loan to buy an existing business, even one that has traded for longer than 60 months, provided you have not owned it for more than 60 months yourself. A franchise is eligible on the same terms.

Some business types and purposes are excluded. Property investment, gambling, regulated financial services and charities are among the excluded types, and the loan cannot repay existing debt or pay for training or qualifications. If you are declined, you must wait at least six months before applying again.

Repaying a Start Up Loan

Illustrative example

Two loans at the fixed rate of 7.5% a year, at November 2026, repaid monthly over five years. There are no arrangement or early repayment fees to add.

£15,000: monthly repayment
£300.57
£15,000: total interest over five years
£3,034.15
£25,000: monthly repayment
£500.95
£25,000: total repaid over five years
£30,056.92
Interest on £25,000 over five years
£5,056.92

A shorter term raises the monthly payment and lowers the total interest. The business loan calculator shows any other sum and term.

Sole traders, partnerships and limited companies

If you trade as a sole trader or in a partnership and need £25,000 or less, apply to the Start Up Loans scheme directly or ask your own bank. Lending of that size to an unincorporated business is regulated credit. A funding search through Swoop is for limited companies and LLPs, and for sole traders and partnerships borrowing more than £25,000.

A limited company director can take a Start Up Loan personally and put the money into the company, either as a loan from the director or as share capital. The loan stays your personal debt even if the company fails. Lending your own money to your company covers how to record it so the company can repay you.

Compare it with the other routes before you apply. A van or equipment can be funded on asset finance, secured on the asset itself. A company with a strong plan can raise equity from angel investors, who take a share of the business in place of repayments. Start-up business funding sets the options side by side.

Questions people ask

What is the interest rate on a Start Up Loan?

At November 2026 it is a fixed 7.5% a year, for loans approved from 6 April 2026. Before that the rate had been 6% since the scheme began in 2012, and loans approved at 6% keep that rate for their whole term. The rate does not change during the life of a loan. There are no set-up fees and no fee for repaying early.

Can I get a Start Up Loan if my business has traded for more than three years?

Yes, if it has traded for up to 60 months. From 6 April 2026 the limit for a first Start Up Loan rose from 36 months to 60 months. If you are buying an existing business, its own trading history can be longer, provided you have not owned it for more than 60 months yourself.

Is a Start Up Loan a personal loan or a business loan?

It is a personal loan to you as an individual, for business purposes. You are personally liable for it even if you trade through a limited company and the company fails. It is unsecured, so you do not put up your home or other assets, and the scheme carries out a personal credit check and an affordability assessment based on your household budget.

Can I get a Start Up Loan with bad credit?

You must pass the scheme’s credit checks and show you can afford the repayments, so recent defaults or judgments make approval harder. The assessment also looks at the strength of your business plan, your cash flow forecast and your personal survival budget. If you are declined, you must wait at least six months before reapplying. See business loans with bad credit.

Can two founders each get a Start Up Loan?

Yes. Each founder can apply for up to £25,000, and one business can receive up to £100,000 in total. Each application is assessed on its own and each founder is personally liable for their own loan. The founders applying must hold at least 50% of the business between them, and each must have an equity stake.

Can I use a Start Up Loan to buy a franchise?

Yes. A franchise is eligible if you meet the normal criteria, and you get the same mentoring, for up to 12 months, as any other first-time recipient. The franchise fee, fit-out and starting stock can all be costs the loan pays for. Franchise finance covers funding a larger franchise purchase.

Finance is subject to status and to the lender’s terms. A personal guarantee makes you liable for the company’s debt if it does not repay, and it can be enforced against your own assets, including your home. Nothing here is a personal recommendation.

Funding searches run on Swoop’s platform. Swoop Finance Limited is a credit broker and not a lender, and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 936513). Buzz Accounting Ltd introduces businesses to Swoop and may receive a fee from Swoop when funding is arranged. Business funding is separate from the financial advice Equity & General Financial Services Limited gives through this website.
